Mangaluru, Mar 5: The coastal regions of Karnataka are likely to experience pre-monsoon showers ahead of schedule, as temperatures continue to soar.
Typically, February brings cool weather to the region, but this year has been unusually hot. Over the past week, the temperature has consistently exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, with several days marked by warm winds. Usually, pre-monsoon showers are expected by late March or early April, but the current trend suggests rainfall could arrive within the next two weeks due to global climatic changes.

The scorching heat has already led to cloud formation in certain areas, with light showers reported recently. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts more localized rain in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, which could bring some relief by lowering maximum temperatures.
During last year’s pre-monsoon season (March-May), the coastal districts recorded a significant increase in rainfall. Dakshina Kannada district received 386.9 mm of rain, up from the average of 243.5 mm—an increase of 60%. Udupi saw a 51% rise, with rainfall reaching 302.3 mm compared to the usual 200.8 mm. Uttara Kannada also reported a 41% increase, with 144.9 mm against the normal 103 mm. Overall, the coastal region recorded 238 mm of rainfall, marking a 50% surge over the expected amount.
Dr Rajegowda, a weather scientist at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, noted the sharp rise in temperatures in recent days. "The intense heat is causing rapid cloud formation, which could lead to localized showers within a week. This rain might also help bring temperatures down," he said.
With the likelihood of early rain, residents of the coastal districts could see some respite from the sweltering conditions soon.
