Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, March 6: Tulunadu is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and ancient traditions, many of which have been passed down through generations and continue to hold significant importance. One such revered tradition is Maayida Kanyapu, which is celebrated during the month of Maayi in Perla, Kasargod.

This unique ritual is still observed in certain places, where two individuals dress as the Kanyapu and Koraga and visit each household in the village.

The ritual, which is seen as a form of worship in many areas, lasts about 10 minutes at each house. While the tradition once lasted for a month, it now takes longer due to the increasing number of houses involved, and the practice often stretches over a month.

The Maayida Kanyapu tradition has been preserved over generations and continues to be an important part of village life in specific regions. As a gesture of respect for the tradition, family members offer rice when the team visits, honouring a practice that has been maintained for ages.

Puttappa Kandige, a local resident, shared, "The tradition continues to live on, and it's a way of showing reverence to our customs."

The Maayida Kanyapu tradition highlights the communal harmony and deep-rooted cultural heritage of Tulunadu. It not only fosters unity among villagers but also stands as a living testament to the region's rich history and customs, preserving the essence of the community's shared identity.
