Patna, Mar 9: Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Saturday launched a massive statewide cancer screening initiative, offering free check-ups across 8,387 panchayats in 45,000 villages.
The programme, inaugurated at the Prabhat Ranjan Diagnostic and Research Centre in Patna, aims to enhance early cancer detection and treatment across the state's 38 districts. A dedicated mobile app has also been introduced to streamline the screening process.

Minister Pandey highlighted the urgency of early cancer detection, noting that many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, reducing the chances of successful treatment. He stressed the need for awareness campaigns to encourage timely screenings.
Director of Prabhat Ranjan Diagnostic and Research Centre, Prabhat Ranjan, explained that the initiative would utilize a mobile app to facilitate screenings. “Villagers are informed about the app through local leaders, and it is downloaded onto household smartphones, enabling remote consultations. Live video calls with doctors help detect symptoms early,” he said.
Once potential cancer cases are identified, further investigations will be arranged, and treatment will be provided free of cost under the Ayushman Card and CM Medical Assistance Fund. Ranjan noted that many rural patients hesitate to disclose their illness due to social stigma, and the app allows for private consultations, encouraging timely medical intervention.
Alongside the cancer screening initiative, Bihar’s first Sleep Institute was also inaugurated to address rising cases of sleep disorders linked to stress and lifestyle changes. The institute will focus on diagnosis, treatment, and research in sleep medicine.
Dr Rupam, who introduced Bihar’s first private-sector electro-physiological lab, highlighted the growing demand for sleep disorder treatments. “Many patients, especially from remote areas, struggle to find proper diagnosis and care. This institute will bridge the gap,” he said.
These pioneering initiatives mark a significant milestone in Bihar’s healthcare sector, aiming to improve disease detection, remove social barriers, and ensure better medical access for the state's rural population.
