Mangalore: Rat Attack on Mumbai-Mangalore Matsyagandha Express!

Mangalore: Rat Attack on Mumbai-Mangalore Matsyagandha Express!

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jan 16: It has been a common experience for the people travelling by trains in the region to find rats running around here and there. Surprisingly, the compartments in which the rats move around happily, many a time, bear a recent date on which pest control is said to have been conducted.

The experience of people who arrived by the air-conditioned compartment of Matsyagandha Express train from Mumbai to the city on Sunday January 15 morning, was no different. Over 15 bags of the passengers were found to have been gnawed at by the rats, which were evident by the cuts and opening inflicted on these baggages. Hands and legs of two women travellers were also found to have been bitten and injured by these rats.

The compartment in question had about 65 passengers. Food and fruits kept in these bags were found to have been eaten up by the rodents. Items like footwear, plastic items, clothes and mats were found to have been thoroughly damaged by the rats. In some cases, the passengers were left with no other alternatives but to lift their baggage with both the hands, as the handles were found to have been severed. The bags of passengers who were seated nearer to the toilets suffered more from rodent attacks.

The passengers, whose oral pleas so far do not seem to have had any effect on the railway officials, have decided to take up the matter with the railways in writing. One of the passengers, Dr Jeevan Shetty from Falnir here, has handed over a written complaint to the station master of Kankanady railway station.

Two passengers, who were bitten by the rats, visited hospitals and got themselves injected with preventive medicines. The explanation of railway staff is that the rats get into the ducts of air-conditioned coaches, and come out only during nights to make merry.

Whatever be the explanation, the railways owe efficient services and safety of passengers’ belongings. While thieves, and those who posed as friends and supplied items laced with intoxicants to passengers before looting them, were dreaded during railway journeys, the passengers now have an additional adversary in the form of rats. Unless the railways act fast, they are sure to face retaliation from irate passengers.

We always blame the Govt and authorites but we too are equally at fault by ping eatable on the floor. spitting and dirtying the windows etc. The Mumbai new local trains are best example about how the public is ruining the platforms and trains by eating pan, guthka and spitting everywhere. first we have to improve ourselves and then blame others. mostly you will find people in full white clothes (politicians and their chamchas)

This is not a big issue. Once I was travelling in train to a long destination with my grand mom and in the middle of the night woke up suddenly to find her missing from her seat. While searched frantically, i found a rat dragging her under the seat. When the matter was reported to the TE , hi shrugged of coolly and said you are lucky that it did not dragged you. Last week when I had snap for a while I found myself dragging by a rat to the toilet.

Either Konkan Railways should have a coach separately identified for "Rats, bedbugs, cockroaches" or else
immediately respond to passengers hue and cry over as poor standard of maintenance staff upkeeping the facilities provided to the passengers. It is high time that Konkan Railway management appreciates the patience and co-operation of travellers who are silently facing the hardships and heed to their immediate need of healthy and hygenic travel.

Hi Juliet very good idea, we will do one thing you buy the train we and tell us, we will set it on fire, but public property we cannot set on fire. I think if you would have born with any more brain's within you, it would have been dangerous to the Society, god knew the consequences. Speak wisely not like a child. Why should we not have our own coaches which can be attached to the Railway engine, we can keep it clean and free of polution or some private firms like rent a car. I think it might work. The booking has to be done earlier that is only coach booking number of people traveling list should be given to the station master while boarding. It's only my idea if you have any other good sugestion please let know.

Rodent menace is increasing by the day and very difficult to control. But allowing it to reach such a stage where a full group of rodents attack any and everything in the compartment is unacceptable. Even many a times rodents have been found in aircraft and were found to have chewed critical wiring systems. Why cannot the railways employ the latest ultrasonic devices which are known to repel rats? Safest would be carry one's own "rat catching" cat on journeys to avoid being bitten!!LOL!!!

The best thing to do is set the train on fire when not in use. This is the best way to teach the authorities a lesson.

They will always give you excuses and lies so best thing to do is take the law in your own hands its not advisable as most people would agree with what I say but sometimes one has to do what is right especially when it comes to safety of people.

RATS ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND SPREAD CONTAGIOUS DISEASE.

No proper cleaning & maintenance, the compartment & the bathroom was smelling badly. The service, it seems that you should not think travelling by train. Any how it is INDIAN RAILWAY [Matsyagandha ]!!!

Send all our politicians only through train. No one is bothered because this is used mainly by middle class people. If central government plan to cut cost on MLC's , then this sector will be improved. Now all MLC's travelling by Flights and enjoying with our money. let them also get blessings of these corruption free Rats.

It is really a shame on the part of Indian railways (Konkan Railway Corporation) by not supervising pest control measures or they don’t have spare compartments once pest control is made. Rodents may be enjoying free ticket and air conditioned compartments. Appreciate appropriate action is taken to avoid this nuisance.
