New York, Mar 12: Hundreds of pro-Palestine demonstrators took to the streets of New York City on Monday, protesting against the Trump administration over the recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and former Columbia University graduate student.
The protest, which began at Washington Square Park, saw nearly 500 participants marching towards the Federal Plaza Immigration Court, demanding Khalil’s immediate release. The demonstrators denounced his arrest as an attack on free speech and an example of the administration’s alleged crackdown on pro-Palestinian voices.

According to officials, Khalil was detained by federal immigration authorities on March 8 despite holding legal permanent resident status. The Department of Homeland Security has accused him of leading activities linked to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, though no formal charges have been filed against him.
Tensions escalated when protesters blocked major streets, leading to a standoff with the New York Police Department (NYPD). Despite repeated warnings to disperse, scuffles broke out, resulting in the arrest of around a dozen demonstrators for disorderly conduct.
The Trump administration has defended Khalil’s detention, citing national security concerns. However, the incident has further fueled debates on free speech, immigration policies, and the growing unrest over Middle East politics in the United States.
More demonstrations are expected in the coming days as activists continue to call for Khalil’s release.
