Maharashtra opposition walks out over unfulfilled aid promise for women

Mumbai, Mar 12: A political storm erupted in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as the opposition staged a walkout, accusing the Mahayuti government of reneging on its promise to increase monthly financial aid under the Ladki Bahin Yojana from ?1,500 to ?2,100.

The controversy was sparked by NCP-SP legislator Rohit Pawar, who raised concerns over the unfulfilled commitment. He pointed out that despite pre-election assurances, the recent state Budget made no mention of the proposed hike for women beneficiaries. Shiv Sena-UBT legislator Varun Sardesai joined the criticism, demanding an immediate rollout of the revised aid. With no response from the government, the opposition members walked out in protest.

Defending the government’s stance, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar maintained that while the increase was promised during the elections, there was no definitive timeline given. "We had said we would raise the amount if voted to power. But did I ever specify when? Show me any statement where I gave a date. The announcement will come in due course, and beneficiaries will receive the increased amount thereafter," he asserted.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also attempted to pacify concerns, stating that the enhanced payout is under consideration and will be implemented at an appropriate time. However, opposition leaders including Jayant Patil, Vijay Wadettiwar, and Jitendra Awhad criticized the government for delaying the increase, alleging that it betrayed the trust of women beneficiaries.

Earlier in the day, before the Assembly proceedings commenced, opposition leaders staged a demonstration at the entrance of Vidhan Bhavan, demanding an announcement on farm loan waivers. The issue added fuel to the ongoing political tension, with Ajit Pawar later denying that he had made any commitment regarding a waiver.

The growing discontent among opposition leaders highlights the pressure on the Mahayuti government to fulfill its election promises, especially concerning welfare schemes and financial relief for farmers.
