Mangalore, Jan 16: The 17th National Youth Festival, which, with its magnificence and variety of entertainment has brought new pride to the city of Mangalore, is not without its share of controversy, as revealed at the press meet held by DC Chanappa Gowda here Monday January 16.
Charges of favoritism and nepotism by high-level officials in giving VVIP passes to their family members and close friends, officials taking naps during a colourful folk dance programme at TMA Pai Hall, inadequate seating arrangement for the media such that a few reporters, photographers and videographers had to sit on the floor while reporting at TMA Pai Hall on Sunday, and disrespect shown by zilla panchayat official Nazeer towards mayor Praveen where the latter was asked to get up from his seat and make place for Nazeer's family members - all these issues were raised at the press conference held TMAI Pai Hall on Monday.
Ironically, the press conference was called by the DC to thank the media for giving wide coverage to the successful National Youth Festival. However, when principal secretary of youth affairs and sports department said that as a token of gratitude he would like to give bags to journalists, the irked media persons took him to task for over half an hour.
"At a national-level event like the Youth Festival, when basic arrangements were not in place, what is the point in appeasing the media which acts freely without bias?" they questioned.
Though Perumal tried to give reasons for the shortcomings, he failed to give any convincing replies.
Perumal said that before choosing Mangalore as host for the Youth Festival, it was planned to be held at Bangalore. "A team led by the then youth affairs and sports minister Goolihatti Shekar had taken a team of 167 people to Bhubaneshwar, and later at official meetings it was decided to be held in Mangalore considering the weather and connectivity in terms of transport," he said. However, the media refused to buy the argument as an excuse for poor arrangements.
When the DC’s effort to calm down the media persons also went in vain, he said he would call another press meet to discuss the issues raised by them.
