Mangalore, Jan 16: The 17th National Youth Festival, which, with its magnificence and variety of entertainment has brought new pride to the city of Mangalore, is not without its share of controversy, as revealed at the press meet held by DC Chanappa Gowda here Monday January 16.

Charges of favoritism and nepotism by high-level officials in giving VVIP passes to their family members and close friends, officials taking naps during a colourful folk dance programme at TMA Pai Hall, inadequate seating arrangement for the media such that a few reporters, photographers and videographers had to sit on the floor while reporting at TMA Pai Hall on Sunday, and disrespect shown by zilla panchayat official Nazeer towards mayor Praveen where the latter was asked to get up from his seat and make place for Nazeer's family members - all these issues were raised at the press conference held TMAI Pai Hall on Monday.

Ironically, the press conference was called by the DC to thank the media for giving wide coverage to the successful National Youth Festival. However, when principal secretary of youth affairs and sports department said that as a token of gratitude he would like to give bags to journalists, the irked media persons took him to task for over half an hour.

"At a national-level event like the Youth Festival, when basic arrangements were not in place, what is the point in appeasing the media which acts freely without bias?" they questioned.

Though Perumal tried to give reasons for the shortcomings, he failed to give any convincing replies.

Perumal said that before choosing Mangalore as host for the Youth Festival, it was planned to be held at Bangalore. "A team led by the then youth affairs and sports minister Goolihatti Shekar had taken a team of 167 people to Bhubaneshwar, and later at official meetings it was decided to be held in Mangalore considering the weather and connectivity in terms of transport," he said. However, the media refused to buy the argument as an excuse for poor arrangements.

When the DC’s effort to calm down the media persons also went in vain, he said he would call another press meet to discuss the issues raised by them.

When I visited the venues eg., Mangala stadium the entry/exit points should have barricades to control people. By the way the show was good. The programes at Mangala stadium did not start on time.

I think media should not make a issue out of this matter as such pitfalls are bound to happen in a event of this magnitude. Media always want the cake and eat it too. If the people in general have not felt any shortcomings, why make such a hue and cry.

I was surprised why there were no untoward incidents while conducting such a huge events? Thank God it’s concluded without any incidents but now Media is not happy …………. Very surprising!!!!!!!!! Some of them forgot their protocol while treating respected personalities like Mayor. But it is quite normal to happen like this when you have a Zilla Punchayat Official like Najeer. But all our Dear Media Great Personalities pls do not bother for any good or bad treatment meted towards your personals. Because you are there to cover the “events” not the “incidents”.

That's is common every where. VVIP Passes are made for the families of organizers. Coz no VIP will come for such function. Well wishers must take ticket or sit at back seat if they really love the show. But the show must go on? It was a successful show, Manglore name flying high that's so wonderful.

Bharath is right and we are all proud to be Mangaloreans first. It was a fantastic event as also Mangalore never got such a big event till now and so some negatives are welcome which would be corrected in coming big events for sure. Overall i would say it was a grand success and we all should thank all the organizers for keeping Mangalore in recognition and doing a fantastic job

Pretty hilarious that officials took a nap during the dance programmes. I would have been rather shocked if nepotism did not take place.

Regular setbacks are obvious for events and it is a commendable job that efforts were even taken to host the event but some of the problems should not be overlooked.

The 'PRESS' certainly raises valid issues, make no bones about it. It was a 'National Youth Festival'some shortcomings may be forgiven. not the ones mentioned here-in by the media. What was disgusting was some nobody's parading as VVIP's. more disgusting was the fact that the
District Administration failed to provide 'decent' passes even to the 'Sponsors' !!

One can never be satisfied with whatever facilities given to them.Press personnel are not exception to this. While organising such a big event ,minor things will happen ,which should not be blown out of proportion! We should appreciate the hard work put up by all officials and voulunteers (even the young boys from scouts, shown carrying the bags in the picture )for their services in making this grand event so successful and popular. My request to all press personnel ,lets not make a mountain of a molehill.just forget what has happened.

Dear Friends from the Media, ups and downs is natural when such a huge even is organized for 4 days. But we citizen of Mangalore enjoyed all these days by sitting on the galleries even though we could approach to get the VIP passes. it is not easy to convince 50 thousand crowd. Appreciate the good work done by the department. Arrangements are marvelous and praiseworthy. keep it up. we hope to see atleast alternate years such programmes. Proud to be Mangalorean, we have our own recognisition.
