Combatting chronic inflammation: key nutrients for a healthier body

New Delhi, Mar 18: Inflammation is a natural immune response, but when it becomes chronic, it can contribute to conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, and neurodegenerative disorders. Health experts emphasize that certain nutrients—Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and polyphenols—offer significant anti-inflammatory benefits.

Dr Upasana Arora, MD of Yashoda super speciality Hospital, Kaushambi, explains, “Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. It also supports immune function and collagen synthesis, aiding tissue repair.” Foods rich in Vitamin C include citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, and leafy greens.

Vitamin E, especially in its tocopherol and tocotrienol forms, helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and regulates inflammatory responses. Studies indicate that sufficient Vitamin E intake can lower inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Nuts, seeds, spinach, and avocados are excellent sources of this essential nutrient.

According to Dr Bhavna Garg, senior consultant, dietitian and nutritionist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi, “Polyphenols are plant compounds with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They regulate inflammation by modulating pathways like NF-κB, which controls inflammatory cytokine production.” Foods such as berries, dark chocolate, green tea, and olive oil are rich sources of polyphenols.

A diet rich in colourful fruits, vegetables, nuts, and plant-based foods can help combat chronic inflammation naturally. Experts suggest prioritizing whole foods for better bioavailability and enhanced health benefits, while supplementation may be considered when necessary.

By making simple dietary adjustments, individuals can harness the benefits of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and polyphenols, promoting long-term wellness and reducing the risk of inflammation-related diseases.
