Mangalore: Karnataka Bags Eight Prizes at National Youth Festival, Winners Elated

Mangalore, Jan 16: Karnataka, host state of the 17th edition of National Youth Festival, has emerged victorious in a number of competitive events, securing first prizes in folk song, kuchipudi, classical vocal hindustani and sitar competitions.
Karnataka also bagged second prizes in events like classical dance - Bharatanatyam, classical vocal carnatic and third prize in harmonium (light) and tabla.
Karnataka artistes share their joy
Shivani Mirajkar who bagged first prize in classical vocal Hindustani category said that she is not from a family with any background of music. She was inspired by the voice of Hindustani singer Lata Mangeshwar at an early age. She is from Bangalore and studying in first PUC. "By god’s grace I could win the first prize in a national-level competition," she said. It was the first time she was participating in a national youth festival.
Another artist from Karnataka who won first prize in sitar, Mohsin Khan, said that he is pursuing second year of bachelor's degree in music. This was second time he was winning the first prize in national youth festival, the first being in Udaipur. Hailing from Dharwad, he said he dedicates his success to his grandfather Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan as he taught him the basics of the art of playing sitar. He also recalled the support extended by his father Ustad Hameed Khan and mother Farida Khan.
Archana Punyesh hailing from Bangalore who won the first prize in Kuchipudi said that she had tough competition from the neighboring state Kerala. She runs a Kuchipudi dance school of her own named ‘Jathin Nrithya Shaala’ where 65 students are taught Kuchipudi.
Anil V Ayyar from Karnataka who bagged the first prize in Bharatanatyam also expressed his happiness over the support given by the audience.
