St Agnes College hosts inspirational talk by Dr Terence Andrade

Mangaluru, Mar 21: St Agnes College welcomed Dr Terence Andrade on March 20, executive vice president of Alpha Numeric Group, USA, and former Karachi hockey player, for an inspiring talk titled 'From Karachi's Hockey Fields to Silicon Valley's Innovation Hubs'.

Dr Andrade's journey embodies a remarkable blend of athletic and academic excellence. His story begins at St Patrick’s School in Karachi, where he first showcased his talent in track and field. By the time he reached the 8th grade, he had also begun playing field hockey, leading his class team to victory in inter-class tournaments while simultaneously excelling in athletics.

Transitioning to St Patrick's College in 1966, Dr Andrade continued to excel in both academics and sports, playing for the college's hockey team in intercollegiate matches. He formed lasting bonds with notable athletes, including future cricket star Wasim Bari. After graduating in 1968, he pursued a degree in electrical engineering at NED Engineering College, where he became an integral part of the hockey team, contributing to their success in various championships.

Dr Andrade's talent caught the eye of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) hockey team, where he initially started as a substitute but quickly proved himself as a key player. His breakthrough moment came during an All-Pakistan Hockey Tournament, where he stepped in for Hyesons Sugar Mills and led them to the semi-finals, earning recognition from influential hockey officials.

In addition to his hockey achievements, Dr Andrade excelled in track and field, setting records and winning races. After completing his bachelor’s degree in 1973, he moved to the USA for advanced studies, ultimately working at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in Silicon Valley.

Even while building his career, Dr Andrade remained connected to hockey, captaining the Northern California Field Hockey Club and earning accolades for his performance. Today, he resides in Santa Clara, where he continues to impact the tech industry while cherishing the friendships forged through sports.

Principal Sr Dr M Venissa AC, vice principal Sr Dr Roopa Rodrigues AC, PG coordinator Sr Dr M Vinora AC and faculty members graced this event by their presence.

The session commenced with an invocation led by Alice Lobo and group. The speaker was introduced by Seementhini Fernandes, assistant professor, department of computer science, Sunena Rai, III BSc student served as an emcee for the program, while Rajwa Quasim, III BA delivered the vote of thanks. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, which fostered interaction among participants.

Overall, it was a highly appreciated session that provided valuable insights on contributing to personal growth, career development and stressed on how to focus, to never give up, be humble and become successful in life.
