Actor-director Manoj Bharathi passes away at 48, Tamil film industry mourns

Chennai, Mar 26: Tamil actor and director Manoj Bharathi, son of legendary filmmaker Bharathirajaa, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, following a heart attack. He was 48. Industry sources revealed that he had undergone heart surgery a few months ago and was recuperating. He is survived by his wife Nandana and daughters Arshitha and Mathivadhani.

The sudden demise of Manoj Bharathi has left the Tamil film industry and fans in deep shock. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, expressing his condolences, said, “I was deeply pained to learn of the passing of actor and director Manoj Bharathi. His unexpected demise at such a young age is heartbreaking. My deepest sympathies to director Bharathirajaa, Manoj’s family, and friends in the film fraternity.”

Manoj made his cinematic debut in 1999 with Taj Mahal, a romantic drama directed by Bharathirajaa. The film, featuring Riya Sen as the female lead, had music by AR Rahman and a script penned by Mani Ratnam.

Following Taj Mahal, Manoj Bharathi starred in several films, including Kadal Pookal, Alli Arjuna, Viruman, and Maanaadu, leaving a lasting impression on Tamil cinema. In 2023, he made his directorial debut with Margazhi Thingal, featuring his father Bharathirajaa in a key role alongside newcomers Shyaam Selvan and Rakshana. The film’s music was composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja.
