Gold smuggling case: Court denies bail to actress Ranya Rao

Bengaluru, Mar 27: A sessions court in Bengaluru on Thursday denied bail to Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested earlier this month in connection with a large-scale gold smuggling racket.

This is the third time her bail plea has been rejected. Previously, both the special court for economic offences and a magistrate court had turned down her request.

Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of senior police officer Ramchandra Rao, was taken into custody on March 3 after being accused of smuggling 14.2 kg of gold worth over Rs 12.56 crore.

The prosecution argued that she had admitted to purchasing gold using hawala channels. Investigators have also sought a judicial inquiry against her, stating that it could uncover further financial irregularities.

Tarun Raju, a close associate of Ranya and the second accused in the case, is also awaiting a decision on his bail application.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, police arrested gold merchant Sahil Sakariya Jain for allegedly helping dispose of the smuggled gold linked to the actress. This is the third arrest in the case. Jain has been remanded to police custody for four days for further investigation.

Authorities have uncovered that Ranya and Tarun traveled to Dubai together at least 26 times. Tarun reportedly flew from Dubai to Hyderabad on a ticket booked by the actress, and he allegedly handed over gold to her while in Dubai.

The case has also drawn scrutiny toward Ranya’s stepfather, DGP K Ramchandra Rao, who was questioned by investigators. On March 15, the Karnataka government placed him on compulsory leave until further notice.

Investigators believe Ranya misused her stepfather's position to bypass security checks by taking advantage of protocols meant for top-ranking officials.

The latest arrest of Sahil Jain came after police interrogated Ranya and Tarun, leading them to uncover his alleged role in the smuggling operation. Jain, a jewellery shop owner from Ballari, is suspected of facilitating the illegal sale of the smuggled gold.
