WhatsApp bans 9.7 million Indian accounts in February for policy violations

New Delhi, Apr 1: Popular messaging platform WhatsApp has banned over 9.7 million accounts in India during February 2025, citing violations of its Terms of Service. Of these, more than 1.4 million accounts were proactively removed before any user complaints were registered.

In its latest safety report, WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to curbing misuse through AI-driven moderation and advanced detection tools. "We have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence, data experts, and robust processes to keep our platform safe," a company spokesperson stated.

The bans were imposed to tackle issues such as spamming, automated messaging via third-party apps, and adding users to groups without consent. Forwarding misinformation and unsolicited messaging were also among the primary reasons for account suspensions.

As per the IT Rules 2021, WhatsApp’s report details the number of user complaints received, actions taken, and its proactive efforts to prevent abuse. The company has urged users to act responsibly by seeking consent before adding contacts to groups, refraining from forwarding unverified content, and respecting requests to stop messaging.

WhatsApp reiterated that harassment, defamation, and spreading false information violate its policies. Users who believe their accounts were wrongfully banned can appeal through the app by entering a 6-digit verification code, following which the company will review their case.
