New Delhi, Apr 2: A recent survey has revealed a significant increase in public awareness about the cancer risks associated with alcohol consumption. The findings indicate that more people are now recognizing alcohol as a potential carcinogen, thanks to ongoing health campaigns and educational initiatives.
Conducted by a team of health researchers across multiple states, the survey found that nearly 45% of respondents were aware that alcohol consumption can increase the risk of developing various types of cancer, including oral, throat, liver, breast, and colorectal cancers. This marks a noticeable rise from previous surveys, where awareness levels were considerably lower.

Health experts have attributed the growing awareness to consistent messaging by medical professionals, awareness campaigns, and the inclusion of warning labels on alcoholic beverage packaging in some regions. Public discussions around lifestyle-related health risks have also contributed to spreading knowledge about the harmful effects of alcohol.
“Alcohol is a well-established risk factor for several cancers. It is encouraging to see that more people are becoming aware of this fact. However, much work still needs to be done to educate the public about safe consumption limits and the potential dangers of heavy drinking,” said Dr Arjun Mehta, an oncologist associated with the study.
The survey also highlighted a gap in awareness among certain demographics, particularly younger adults and individuals from rural areas. Health officials are now calling for more targeted efforts to reach these groups through tailored awareness programs.
With alcohol consumption steadily rising across the country, experts emphasize the importance of disseminating accurate information to encourage healthier lifestyle choices and reduce cancer incidence rates.
Public health authorities are expected to launch new campaigns aimed at further increasing awareness about alcohol-related cancer risks, especially among vulnerable populations.
