New Delhi, Apr 2: In a remarkable stride towards green mobility, India has achieved sales of over 13 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) during the financial year 2024-25, the Centre announced on Wednesday. The milestone underscores the country’s accelerating transition towards sustainable transportation amid rising concerns over pollution and climate change.
According to data released by the ministry of heavy industries, the substantial increase in EV sales reflects growing consumer awareness, supportive government policies, and improvements in charging infrastructure across the country. The tally includes electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and passenger vehicles, with two-wheelers accounting for the lion’s share of the market.
“The record sales of over 13 lakh EVs this fiscal year is a testament to the successful implementation of government incentives and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting clean energy solutions,” a senior ministry official stated.
The Centre’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) II scheme, along with various state-level subsidies and incentives, has played a significant role in boosting EV adoption. Additionally, manufacturers have introduced more affordable models with enhanced battery life and performance, making electric vehicles increasingly accessible to the masses.
Experts believe that the continued growth in the EV sector will not only contribute to India’s ambitious carbon reduction targets but also stimulate investments in allied industries such as battery manufacturing and charging infrastructure.
However, industry leaders have cautioned that further efforts are needed to address challenges related to charging infrastructure, battery disposal, and supply chain management to maintain the momentum.
The Centre has reiterated its commitment to promoting e-mobility, aiming for even higher sales figures in the coming years as India strives to become a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing and adoption.
