SRH head coach Vettori admits team struggling to read conditions after fourth straight loss

Hyderabad, Apr 7: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat in the ongoing IPL 2025, going down to Gujarat Titans (GT) by seven wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Following the dismal outing, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori admitted that his team had failed to properly assess and respect the playing conditions, particularly with the bat.

The SRH batting line-up, known for its aggressive approach, once again faltered, managing only 152/8 in their allotted 20 overs. GT, the 2022 IPL champions, chased down the target with ease in just 16.4 overs, handing SRH another painful defeat.

“I think we know the style is going to work, but we have to respect conditions, and we have to assess really well and that's probably something we haven't done,” Vettori said in the post-match press conference. “Also, we have to respect how well other teams are bowling. They’ve been putting a lot of planning into our top three, and our batters haven’t been able to execute at times.”

Vettori pointed out that the team aimed for a total in the 160-170 range but fell about 20 runs short. “We saw the pitch was tricky and the assessment was that 160-170 would be a competitive score. We were close but didn’t get there. Those extra 20 runs could have made a difference,” he added.

With SRH languishing at the bottom of the points table, Vettori emphasised the importance of improvement across all departments. “We haven’t clicked in any one game yet — not in batting, bowling or fielding. Last season, we managed to put up big totals and barely held on with the ball. This time, we haven’t been able to do that.”

He remained hopeful, however, pointing to the nature of the IPL where fortunes can change quickly. “There’s still confidence in the group. The IPL offers fast turnarounds and a chance for individuals to step up. But now it’s the collective effort that matters,” he concluded.

SRH will look to turn things around when they face Punjab Kings on April 12 in what is now a crucial fixture to stay alive in the tournament.
