UN raises alarm over Gaza crisis, says Israeli strikes threaten future of Palestinians

Gaza, Apr 11: The United Nations has issued a grave warning that the scale and intensity of Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza are endangering the future viability of Palestinians as a group.

UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said the cumulative impact of mass killings, displacement, infrastructure destruction, and restricted access to essentials could amount to serious violations of international law. She said women and children make up a large portion of the casualties.

Between March 18 and April 9, Israel carried out over 220 air raids, including 36 attacks where only women and children were killed. In the latest strike in Khan Younis on Friday, 10 people from the same family, including seven children, were killed.

Even areas marked as safe zones, such as al-Mawasi, have been bombed, leaving civilians with “nowhere safe to go,” Shamdasani said.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization warned that Gaza’s hospitals are running out of critical supplies like antibiotics and IV fluids. Clean water is also vanishing, pushing Gaza City into a "real thirst crisis," according to local authorities.

Since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, over 1,500 more people have been killed. The total Palestinian death toll since October 7, 2023, has surpassed 61,700, with thousands still missing under rubble.
