“A role model like no other”: KKR coach praises Rahane’s quiet brilliance & impact on young batters

New Delhi, Apr 12: Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) assistant coach Ottis Gibson has heaped praise on Ajinkya Rahane, hailing the veteran batter not just as a leader but as a batting role model for the entire squad. Drawing comparisons with cricketing greats like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Gibson said Rahane's preparation, composure, and consistency make him an inspiration, especially for the younger players in the KKR camp.

Rahane has had an impressive IPL 2025 season so far, racking up 204 runs in six matches at an average of 40.8 and a strike rate of 154.54. His leadership and composed approach have helped steer KKR to third place on the points table, with their latest triumph coming against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a convincing eight-wicket win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

In a video shared by KKR on Saturday, Gibson shared insights into Rahane’s work ethic.

“Often we talk about role models and look outside our own teams — names like MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli come up. But inside this dressing room, Jinks (Rahane) is the role model. He’s meticulous in his preparation — no flashy drills, no bowlers — just 20 minutes of focused practice, bubble feeds and throwdowns,” Gibson said.

Gibson emphasized how Rahane’s dedication translates into results on the field.

“He rarely hits the ball in the air during practice. It’s all grounded shots, methodical and purposeful. Come game time, he knows his technique inside out. His strike rate of over 150 shows that he doesn’t just play textbook cricket — he plays smart, aggressive, and calculated cricket,” he added.

Beyond technique, Gibson lauded the sense of calm and control Rahane brings to the dressing room.

“There’s a quiet confidence in how he goes about his business. That calmness becomes infectious. If our young players are paying attention, they’ll learn what it really means to be a professional.”

Backing Gibson’s sentiments, veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali chimed in with his trademark humor.

“I totally agree with coach. Jinks is a fantastic role model — but personally, my role model is Sunil Narine, because he can smash the first ball for six, no matter who’s bowling!” Moeen joked, bringing a light moment to the discussion.

KKR, who are looking to defend their title this season, will next face Punjab Kings led by Shreyas Iyer on April 15 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. With Rahane leading by example, the team looks poised to continue their strong campaign.
