Israeli-American hostage appears in Hamas video, pleads for release

Gaza, Apr 13: Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has released a distressing video showing Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, who has been held captive in Gaza since October 7, 2023. In the footage, the 21-year-old appears mentally and physically distressed, questioning why he remains in captivity instead of being home with his loved ones.

Alexander, born in Tel Aviv and raised in New Jersey, had returned to Israel in 2022 to join the army. He was abducted during Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel. Expressing concern over his safety amid ongoing Israeli strikes, he blamed the Israeli government for failing to secure his release.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Alexander’s family, assuring them of continued efforts to bring all hostages home. Hamas, meanwhile, has reportedly agreed to release Alexander and the bodies of four other hostages, but negotiations remain stalled since the ceasefire lapsed on March 1.

Israel resumed airstrikes on Gaza from March 18, with over 1,500 Palestinians killed in the renewed offensive, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
