Tel Aviv, Apr 15: In a poignant gesture coinciding with the Jewish festival of Passover, Israeli president Isaac Herzog on Monday visited the family of Ziv and Gali Berman, twin brothers who have been held hostage in Gaza for over 550 days.

The brothers, described as “wonderful and caring young Israelis,” were abducted from their home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza during the October 7, 2023 attacks and are believed to be held by Hamas.

“556 days ago, Gali and Ziv Berman were brutally kidnapped from their home. Since then, they have been imprisoned in the dungeons of Gaza, in the hands of cruel terrorists,” said President Herzog during his visit.

He was accompanied by his wife Michal as they met with the hostages' aunt, Macabit, and brother, Idan, at the family’s temporary residence. The President used the opportunity to renew his appeal for the immediate release of all hostages still held in Gaza.

“This must be the immediate and supreme demand of all who believe in freedom and hope for a better future for our region,” Herzog said. “They—along with all the other hostages—deserve their freedom, and they must be released at once.”

The visit took place on the second day of Passover, a festival symbolising liberation, making the president’s message even more resonant as Israel continues to call for the safe return of its citizens.
