Gaza, Apr 21: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported that nearly 69 percent of the Gaza Strip is currently under active Israeli displacement orders, with the humanitarian situation rapidly deteriorating due to intensified military operations and a prolonged aid blockade.
Between March 18 and April 14, the Israeli army issued at least 20 new displacement orders, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee again. "Currently, UNRWA operates 115 shelters across Gaza, housing over 90,000 displaced people," the agency stated on Sunday.
Since the collapse of the ceasefire on March 18, around 420,000 individuals have been displaced once more. UNRWA called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and unrestricted access to humanitarian and commercial supplies to alleviate suffering in the war-torn enclave.
The situation has worsened since Israel blocked all humanitarian aid into Gaza on March 2 and resumed military operations on March 18. On Sunday alone, at least 29 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes, Gaza’s Civil Defence confirmed.
In central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, an Israeli airstrike on a residential home killed 10 people and injured several others. In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, one woman was killed and four were injured in a drone attack on a tent sheltering displaced people. Four more were killed in separate strikes across the city.
According to Gaza’s health authorities, the ongoing Israeli offensive has killed 1,827 people and injured 4,828 since March 18. Overall, since the war began in October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has surged to 51,201, with over 116,800 people wounded.
