Panaji, Apr 24: The recently introduced Goa Outdoor Advertisement Bill has stirred political debate, with Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai calling for a thorough re-evaluation of the legislation, citing public inconvenience and a lack of clarity.
Sardesai questioned the logic behind entrusting the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) with regulatory powers over hoardings and outdoor ads. "This bill has been pushed without adequate discussion or stakeholder consultation. The people of Goa are confused and burdened by it," he said, urging the government to put the bill on hold and reconsider its provisions.
In a sharp rebuttal, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stood firm on the government's stance, stressing that a regulated outdoor advertising policy is essential for a tourism-centric state like Goa. “Unregulated hoardings not only mar the state’s scenic beauty but also pose safety and planning issues,” Khaunte noted, adding that the bill aims to bring transparency, aesthetics, and order to public spaces.
As the bill awaits further discussion, the tug-of-war between development needs and regulatory overreach continues—with Goa’s visual identity and urban landscape at the center of the debate.
