New Delhi, Apr 27: In a groundbreaking achievement, the department of ophthalmology at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi has successfully performed minimally invasive glaucoma surgery using a 3D microscope. This innovative procedure marks a significant milestone for the Armed Forces.
The 3D visualisation system used in the surgery employs special 3D polarisation glasses and a 55-inch 4K ultra-HD display, offering a clearer and more precise view during eye surgeries. The system is beneficial for treating various ocular conditions, including squint, cataracts, corneal issues, and retinal disorders.
One of the key advantages of this technology is the reduction in surgical time and complication rates compared to traditional methods. It also decreases the power of the endoilluminator, reduces photo-toxicity, and makes it easier to handle complex cases. Surgeons and nurses have reported higher satisfaction with the system's ease of use.
“This initiative underscores the Indian Army's commitment to providing top-tier medical services at its premier institutions,” the Ministry of Defence stated. The facility aims to enhance the Army Hospital's capabilities in offering cutting-edge eye care.
Experts stress the importance of regular eye check-ups for adults, particularly in their 40s, to detect glaucoma, a chronic disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. Dr. Tanuj Dada, Head of Glaucoma Services at AIIMS, emphasized that early detection is crucial, as glaucoma often shows no symptoms until significant damage is done.
With rising glaucoma-related blindness in India, the Ministry urges greater awareness and timely detection to prevent further vision loss.
