Mumbai, Apr 27: A 17-year-old boy has been detained in connection with the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl in Navi Mumbai, police said on Sunday.

The girl was found severely injured at the base of a hill late on Friday night and was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Her family had reported her missing earlier in the day, prompting the police to file a kidnapping case and begin an investigation.

As the investigation progressed, a case of murder was added to the FIR after the girl’s death. The police detained the minor boy, who was last seen with the victim. During interrogation, the boy confessed to the crime, police officials revealed.

According to the police, the boy allegedly lured the girl to a secluded spot at the base of the hills on the pretext of taking a selfie. However, driven by anger from a prior argument with the girl, he reportedly assaulted her and struck her with a large stone, before fleeing the scene.

The accused will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board for further proceedings.
