Jerusalem, Apr 30: Israel raised its emergency alert to the highest level on Wednesday as fast-moving wildfires engulfed forested hills west of Jerusalem, prompting mass evacuations, road closures, and a call for international firefighting assistance.

Over 120 fire teams, backed by aircraft and helicopters, battled the blaze fanned by scorching 35°C temperatures and winds gusting up to 70 km/h. Another 22 teams are en route to reinforce efforts, as the Fire and Rescue Authority activated national emergency protocols.

The fires forced the evacuation of five communities, while others were told to remain on alert. A portion of the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was closed, causing significant disruption.

Twelve people, including two infants, were treated for smoke inhalation, according to Magen David Adom emergency services.

Commissioner Eyal Caspi confirmed that firefighting forces have been mobilized from all districts. Israel has also requested assistance from Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, and Italy, according to state broadcaster Kan.

The Israel Defense Forces deployed troops and aerial units to assist in evacuations and provide real-time situational awareness.

The disaster has also disrupted national observances. Memorial Day ceremonies, including those at the Latrun Armored Corps Memorial, were cancelled, and the Defense Ministry urged people to avoid military cemeteries.
