Wildfire disrupts Israel's Independence Day; foreign aid rushed in to battle blaze

Jerusalem, May 1: As Israel marked its Independence Day, a massive wildfire continued to rage near Jerusalem for a second straight day, forcing evacuations, stranding motorists, and prompting an international response to contain the flames.

The fire, which ignited around midday on Wednesday amid scorching heat, dry conditions, and gusty winds, quickly engulfed sections of pine forest and reached dangerously close to the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The road was temporarily shut down, sending panicked drivers fleeing from their vehicles as flames neared.

Though the highway reopened on Thursday morning, the aftermath was visible: large swathes of charred forest, pink fire-retardant coating the treetops, and smoke still lingering heavily in the air.

Emergency services said at least 12 people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, with another 10 treated at the scene. Authorities issued strong warnings for the public to avoid parks and forests, especially during Independence Day celebrations, which traditionally involve family barbecues in outdoor areas.

Italy, France, Spain, Romania, and Croatia swiftly responded to Israel’s request for help, dispatching firefighting planes. North Macedonia and Cyprus also joined the effort, sending water-dropping aircraft. By Thursday morning, 10 aircraft were already in action, with eight more expected to arrive during the day.

The memory of Israel’s deadliest fire in 2010 when 44 people died in a blaze on Mount Carmel still looms large, and officials are not taking any chances. Multiple communities in the fire’s path have been evacuated as a precaution.

Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services continue to urge extreme caution from the public, particularly regarding open flames and barbecues during the holiday. “Even a single spark can turn deadly in these conditions,” one official warned.
