Bangalore: 2200-km Rail Line Projects to be Completed in Four Years

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jan 22: A record length of 2200 km of ongoing railway projects, including new lines, gauge conversion and doubling, are proposed to be completed in Karnataka in the next four years.

Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa, who reviewed the progress of various railway projects in the State in the presence of Railway Board officials and State Government officials, said out of 31 projects, the cost of 15 projects is being shared by the State government.

The total estimated cost of 31 projects is Rs. 17,590 crore.

The review of railway projects assumed significance in the wake of the up coming Union Railway budget for 2012-13.

Out of 3000 km rail lines in the State, work on 800 km has been completed. ''Currently, 125 km line is executed annually and it has been decided scale up to 500 km per year to ensure the remaining 2200 km of projects completed in about four years,” he said.

A committee headed by the State Government’s Chief Secretary has been constituted to expedite land acquisition process for railway projects.

About 2300 acres has been handed over to the railways in the last few months, Muniyappa told reporters after the meeting.

As many as 11 new line projects (1600 km) involving cost of Rs 11,750 crore have been sanctioned.

Out of these 11 projects, cost of nine projects would be shared by the State Government and two projects – Hubli - Ankola and Bangalore-Satyamangalam -- are held up on account of environmental issues.

During the last six years, 88 km of new lines has been completed and an amount of Rs 10,400 crore is required to complete the balance new lines, he said.

Asked about a circular train system to Bangalore, the Minister said: ''We are ready. Let the State Government submit its proposal on the project. The officials will study the feasibility of the project based on the proposal and a survey.”

On movement of trains between Bangalore and Nelamangala, he said due to some technical snag the movement of trains has been delayed.

''I would flag off the train to Nelamangala by March,” Muniyappa said.

A large number of employees and workers travel daily between Bangalore and Nelamangala.

Eight surveys pending for clearances from Union Ministry of Environment and Forests are: Hassan-Mangalore doubling (189 km), Belur-Sringeri new line (70 km), Krishnagiri-Chamarajangar (170 km), Padubidri-Karkala-Belthangady-Ujire-Dharmasthala-Nettane new line (170 km), Mysore-Kushalangar-Madikeri new line (110 km, Bendoor-Kollur-Halady-Hebri-Karkala-Moodabidri-Venoor-Elathangady-Dharmasthala-Nettane new line (60 km), Mysore-Mangalore-via Madikeri new line (272 km) and Panathur-Kanniyuru new line (31 km).

An agency has been fixed for a survey from Mysore to Kushalnagar and the survey has been just commenced, he said.

We dont have electric lines and lagging way behind other states.
In TN almost all the districts have connectivity to state capital and beyond.
Where are we compared to them...what is use of being having skills and not using it. Y cant implement railway tracks at less time unlike china or japan.

After Jafer Sherief, you are the best central minister we ever had, you have really done a great job. But still, I have no faith about any of the projects getting completed. I really don't know what you are talking when projects started 10-15 years ago still have land acqusition issuess! Which 800 km was completed? None of the surveys mentioned here will translate into tracks in next 50 years. I really do not know why we are having surveys on dead end routes when trunk connections are missing in the state. Eventally state and railways blame each other for the sorry status but nothing concrete is being done.

We always see MPs from Kerala and Tamilnadu always demanding facilities for their states whatever political party they belong to. All of them join together to demand anything that is related to their state. Unfortunately we never see any of our MPs opening their mouths in parliament. They go behind Yeddy to support him in Delhi. We have never seen all the Karnataka MPs comming together to demand justice for Karnataka. May be railways, or high ways or anything, Karnataka MPs are not bothered. That is why we have very little train facilities or High ways extended.

As far as Railway is concerned, Karnataka used to be always sidelined although, as a matter of fact, past Rail Ministers were more in numbers from Karnataka viz., Hanumanthiah, Dasappa(of Kodagu), T.A.Pai and the one and only champion to propagate Unigauge sri Jaffar Sharrif.

This is another of those empty promises. In China they are able to do 2000 kms in 4 years and they have done it many times.Let us do a simple calculation:
After independence India has added 20,000 kms of railway lines in 68 years which is about 300kms a year (as opposed to the British who built the other 50,000kms in 90 years). Now he is talking about creating 550 kms a year for the next 4 years!! Given the bureacracy in India it is hard to believe.

Projects are good, but when the Southern Railway is going to electrify Mangalore-Shoranur section. Electrification from shornur to trivandrum has been completed more than 15 years ago. Chennai kanyakumari line electrification is in full force. But no minister even talks about Mangalore- Shornur line electrification. Mangalore is always sidelined by every Government coming to power. Even for the internatinal status for Mangalore Air port there is delay. Why does Govenment of India And Governmentt of Karnatka show step mother attitude towards Mangalore?

Guys, the minister may be in a hurry forgot to put a zero (0) after 4. Instead of 4 years, it should be read / understood as 40 years !!!! Let all of us as Kannadigas, excuse the minister for this mistake !!! If after 4 years he will remain on the same post, he will say that he indeed said it as "40" and not "4" and blame it on the media for wrong printing!!!!!

Do we need to believe Muniappa's statement that it's going to be done in 4years time? Proposed whole region is ecological sensitive as well full of uneven terrain. Clearances from Union Ministry of Environment and Forests itself would take more than 4years of time if there is no powerful lobby of MP's from Karnataka. Then what about land acquisition? Guauge conversion of Bangalore-Mangalore is a best example how railways works and treats Karnataka.

Yeddy got some good trains to Shimoga, intercity expresses from Mysore and Bangalore after he became CM. Now it is the time of DVS to pressurize Central ministers to fulfill the long pending demands of coastal people..

All MLAs, MPs of coastal districts should move together for this..

We need the leaders like Ullal Srinivasa Mallya and George Fernandis. The current politicians of Karnataka are busy fighting with each other and has no time to serve people..

    Dear Muniyappa,

Stop running rails from your mouth. Run it on track.

Hassan-Mangalore doubling (189 km) is on priority. And complete Hassan-Bangalore railway line immediately since it would reduce Blr-Mlr travel time by 2 hours.

Krishnagiri-Chamarajangar is not necessary since it would engulf large area of forests.

Hubli-Ankola is must and should be immediate..

Mysore-Mangalore-via Madikeri is good idea since it would be second access to Bangalore.

I kindly request you to give us a Blr-Karwar night train in the coming budget.

And Mangalore should be connected to PUNE via KARWAR, GOA, LONDA, BELGAVI.. Now a days many people are going to PUNE for IT and other jobs..

Learn from Kerala ministers. Open your mouth in Delhi, not in Bangalore.

Give us a pride to say "MUNIYAPPA is railway minister from Karnataka"

I hope all the above surveys will be completed and track will be laid in next 50 years :-)

I think Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa is dreaming about completion 2200 km of ongoing railway projects to be completed in Karnataka in the next four years? Does he know how many days in next four years and how many KM of railway track to be constructed in one day? Here is the Tally, total 1461 days considering leap year in 2012. It means 1.50KM length of railway track to be readied per day!!!!!! Jago Muniyappa Jago, just show me by walking 1.50KM per day for next one month at least and then you realize how wishful thinking yours is?
