Mumbai Airport appoints Indo Thai as interim ground handler after Celebi exit

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, May 17: In a swift move to ensure uninterrupted services, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has appointed Kolkata-based Indo Thai Airport Services as its interim ground handling partner. The decision follows the termination of Celebi NAS Airport Service after the Ministry of Civil Aviation revoked its security clearance over national security concerns.

An airport spokesperson confirmed that the transition will be seamless and effective immediately, ensuring that critical services like baggage handling, check-in, and boarding continue without disruption. Indo Thai, a certified Indian handler operating at nine airports, was selected after a joint meeting between Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and partner airlines.

The interim arrangement will continue for three months, during which MIAL will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to select a long-term partner.

Meanwhile, Celebi has challenged the government's decision in the Delhi High Court, terming the action “vague and unjustified.” The company claims the move endangers nearly 3,800 jobs and could undermine investor confidence.

In a relief to over 2,000 Celebi employees at CSMIA, MIAL has assured that all staff will be absorbed by Indo Thai on existing terms, securing jobs and maintaining operational efficiency. Equipment owned by Celebi will also be leased to Indo Thai to prevent service gaps.

The government’s action is seen as a response to Turkey’s support for Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, India’s recent counterterrorism operation. The move underscores national security as a key priority in aviation operations.
