Udupi, May 17: To create awareness on mental health and the importance of counselling in overcoming stress and personal challenges, Asare, the counselling cell of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) organised a meaningful street play titled “Manovikasa”, performed by the students of 2nd Year Computer Science and Engineeringin the college premises.
The play was directed by Chaithanya S Maiya, 2nd Year CSE students who guided the team in putting together a performance that truly touched the audience.
The play had two powerful stories that touched the hearts of the audience.
The first story was about a boy who did not score the marks he expected in his SSLC exams. His parents had stopped all his extracurricular activities and forced him to focus only on studies. This made him feel lonely and unhappy. Though he appeared fine outside, he was depressed inside. Later, his parents realised their son’s happiness was more important than marks. They gave him the freedom to follow his interests again. With their support and help from a counsellor, he started recovering and became a better version of himself.

The second story is about a boy who joined a professional course but got into bad friendships. He picked up bad habits and started neglecting his studies. His life began to go off track. At first, he thought going to a counsellor was a sign of weakness. But his teachers guided him and made him understand the value of counselling. With their support and regular counselling sessions, he was able to change his path and improve his life and studies.
Both stories sent a strong message that mental health should not be ignored, and that counselling is a helpful and positive step towards solving problems and becoming the best version of oneself. “Manovikasa” gave a strong message: it is okay to ask for help, and with the right support, anyone can overcome difficulties and become stronger.
