Los Angeles, May 18: A deadly explosion outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, on Saturday killed one person and injured at least five others, according to officials. Authorities have described the blast as a deliberate act of violence, with the FBI labeling it an act of terrorism.
The individual believed to be responsible for the explosion died at the scene, law enforcement sources confirmed. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and investigators have not disclosed any motive or connection between the suspect and the fertility clinic.
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said the blast caused significant damage, shattering windows and scattering debris over several blocks in the desert resort city.
“Make no mistake, this is an intentional act of terrorism,” said Akil Davis, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, during a press briefing. He added that early evidence suggests the fertility clinic was directly targeted.
Asked about a possible motive or any accomplices, Davis said, “We have a person of interest in this investigation, but we are not actively out searching for a suspect at this time.” He declined to elaborate on the relationship between the deceased and the person of interest.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi confirmed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that federal agents are working alongside local authorities to investigate the incident.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, urging residents and visitors to stay away as the active emergency scene remains under investigation.
