Panaji, May 18: In a rare and heartfelt gesture of political humility, Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane issued a public apology to Congress-turned-BJP leader and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, acknowledging that he had wronged him during his tenure as Chief Minister over 15 years ago.
Speaking candidly, Rane admitted to having “harassed” Kamat during his time as a minister in the Congress-led government, but credited him as a guiding force and mentor throughout his political journey.
“I harassed Kamat a lot when I was a Minister under him. Today, I publicly apologize because he has been my mentor, my guide, an iconic leader and a fatherly figure,” said Rane. “He always backed me. He had excellent relations with my father and I will always cherish and maintain that bond.”
Reflecting on the transient nature of political power, Rane emphasized the importance of humanity and humility. “Power comes and goes, but what stays is humanism. You need a big heart to apologize. I made a mistake and I have accepted it. I can never forget that he sanctioned so many health projects—I am indebted to him,” he added.
Rane went on to recall how Kamat had shielded and supported him “like a son” through the highs and lows of his political career. “Life is a long journey, and no one knows what the future holds. But respect for others, especially when in power, is what truly matters.”
Reacting to the apology, Kamat was equally gracious. He noted that Rane’s father, the late Pratapsing Rane, had always treated him as his own son and that their mutual respect extended beyond politics.
The emotional reconciliation comes at a time when cross-party camaraderie is increasingly rare in Indian politics, and serves as a reminder that personal integrity and mutual respect can still find space in public life.
