Mumbai, May 23: Two days after a tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a Swiggy delivery rider in Mumbai, police on Friday detained a suspect believed to be the driver of the water tanker involved in the accident.
The deceased rider, identified as Salman Khan, was killed on Wednesday night while on his way to deliver food to Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli. According to police, his bike was struck by a speeding water tanker near the Gandhi Nagar junction. The impact caused the bike to get lodged under the front bumper of the tanker and be dragged a considerable distance.
Salman's cousin, Mehfooz Hashmi, who was riding pillion, sustained minor injuries and later filed a police complaint. Hashmi had accompanied Khan that night as he too wished to buy some food. Both cousins were part of a group of delivery workers from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, residing in Vikhroli.
After the crash, Hashmi immediately contacted other cousins, who rushed Khan to Mahatma Phule Hospital, where he was declared dead around 1:55 am.
An FIR was filed at the Parksite Police Station, and Senior Inspector Santosh Ghatekar confirmed that a suspect was detained based on CCTV footage. Authorities are currently verifying if the man was indeed driving the tanker at the time of the accident.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of delivery workers who navigate city streets under constant pressure and risk.
