Mangaluru, May 23: Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, has achieved a significant milestone in cardiac care by successfully completing 300 image-guided Left Main Coronary Artery (LMCA) bifurcation percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in the last five years. This achievement underscores hospital's commitment to providing advanced, high-quality cardiac treatment and its leadership in the field of interventional cardiology.
For over a decade, Indiana Hospital has been at the forefront of healthcare, offering cutting-edge treatment and compassionate care to diverse communities. The cardiology department, led by Dr Yusuf Kumble, chief interventional cardiologist, has been pioneering complex coronary interventions for the past 25 years, delivering outstanding outcomes with the aid of state-of-the-art technology and innovative techniques.

LMCA bifurcation disease is a high-risk cardiac condition affecting approximately 5% of patients with coronary artery blockages. It is associated with a high mortality rate if not treated promptly. In most cases, coronary bypass surgery is recommended within 24 hours of diagnosis. Indiana Hospital has emerged as a referral center for patients requiring complex PCI procedures, particularly those from peripheral cardiac centers.
The department has integrated advanced imaging modalities such as Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) along with cutting-edge techniques like Rotablation, Orbital Atherectomy, Excimer Laser Coronary Atherectomy (ELCA), and Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL). These tools have significantly improved precision and outcomes, allowing for safe and effective treatment of complex LMCA bifurcations.
With consistent post-procedure follow-ups extending over five years, Indiana Hospital has demonstrated not only technical expertise but also a strong focus on long-term patient outcomes. This track record has positioned the hospital as a trusted center for complex cardiac procedures.
"We are proud to have reached this milestone. It reflects our unwavering dedication to excellence in patient care, the expertise of our team, and our ongoing investment in world-class technology,” said Dr Kumble. "Our goal remains to provide the best possible outcomes for patients with complex heart conditions," he added.
Indiana Hospital remains committed to its mission of improving lives through innovation, compassion, and excellence in healthcare.
