MMRDA to scrap bids for Rs 14,000 crore infrastructure projects

Mumbai, May 31: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it had decided to scrap tenders for two major infrastructure projects: the Rs 6,000 crore Mumbai Elevated Road Project and the Rs 8,000 crore Road Tunnel Project.

The decision came after Larsen and Toubro (L&T) challenged the MMRDA’s rejection of its technical bids. Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd., a prominent purchaser of electoral bonds prior to the Supreme Court’s scrapping of the scheme, had been declared the successful bidder.

During Thursday’s hearing, a bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and justices A G Masih and A S Chandurkar expressed surprise at Megha Engineering’s selection as the successful bidder.

“It is for the Maharashtra government to take a call on whether to invite fresh tenders for the two projects,” the bench said.

Following the MMRDA’s statement that it would withdraw the tenders, the court disposed of L&T’s appeal as infructuous.
