Bengaluru, Jun 1: Known as the "sunshine vitamin," Vitamin D plays a crucial role in ensuring maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. According to Dr Garima Jain, Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Apollo Cradle & Children's Hospital, Bengaluru, a deficiency in Vitamin D can lead to complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, and low birth weight.
“During pregnancy, the body’s calcium requirement increases to support the baby’s bone development. Vitamin D helps absorb this calcium, making it essential for stronger bones and teeth. It also strengthens the immune system and reduces inflammation,” Dr Jain told HT Lifestyle.

Studies have shown that adequate Vitamin D levels in pregnant women lower the risk of asthma and rickets in infants. While the body naturally produces Vitamin D from sunlight, Dr Jain cautioned against excessive exposure. “Pregnant women often experience increased skin sensitivity, putting them at risk of pigmentation and melasma,” she said, recommending 30 minutes of sunlight exposure during early morning or late afternoon hours.
To balance sun exposure, Dr Jain advises applying sunscreen on sensitive areas while leaving parts of the skin exposed to absorb sunlight. She also stresses the importance of dietary sources like fortified milk, eggs, salmon, and cod liver oil to maintain optimal Vitamin D levels. In some cases, supplements may be necessary.
With proper sunlight, a balanced diet, and supplementation when required, Vitamin D can significantly contribute to a healthier pregnancy and better outcomes for both mother and baby.
