Final supermoon of 2025 to light up Goa sky on December 4

Panaji, Dec 3: Skywatchers in Goa are set for a celestial treat as the final supermoon of 2025 will brighten the night sky on December 4. A supermoon occurs when the Moon, at its closest point to Earth called perigee, aligns with the full moon phase, making it appear bigger and brighter than usual. Scientists term this rare alignment as ‘syzygy-perigee’, but for the public, it promises a stunning view with the Moon appearing up to 14% larger.

In Goa, the supermoon will rise at 5.22 pm and remain visible until it sets at 5.50 am the next morning.

The Association of Friends of Astronomy Goa has arranged free public viewing sessions at multiple locations across the state, with no registration required. In Panaji, the viewing will take place at the public astronomical observatory at Junta House, while in Mapusa, enthusiasts can join the session at the Saraswat College ground in Khorlim. Similar observation points will be set up at Benaulim beach, Baina beach, and the Art Park in Porvorim, offering residents a chance to witness the spectacular lunar display through telescopes and guided sessions.
