Bengaluru, Jun 6: In a swift administrative overhaul following Wednesday's tragic stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left over 50 injured, the Karnataka government has appointed senior IPS officer Seemanth Kumar Singh as the new Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City.

The decision came after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the suspension of outgoing police commissioner B Dayananda, citing gross negligence and failure in crowd management during the event. The state government's action follows mounting public outrage and demands for accountability in the wake of the deadly incident.

Seemanth Kumar Singh, a 1996-batch officer of the Karnataka cadre, was serving as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force, prior to his new posting. Known for his sharp administrative acumen and prior experience in handling large-scale public gatherings, Singh is expected to bring in renewed discipline and public trust in the city’s policing system.

The official government notification stated: “Seemanth Kumar Singh, IPS (KN: 1996), Additional Director General of Police, Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force, Bengaluru is transferred with immediate effect and posted until further orders as Additional Director General of Police & Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, Bengaluru.”

Sources in the government have hinted that Singh’s appointment aims not only at damage control but also at strengthening overall security mechanisms in the city. With Bengaluru frequently hosting major public and sporting events, officials stressed the urgent need for robust crowd control strategies and enhanced coordination among departments.
