New Delhi, Jun 11: With Delhi bracing for daytime temperatures soaring up to 45 degrees Celsius, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday issued a public advisory urging citizens to stay indoors during peak heat hours and drink plenty of safe fluids to stay hydrated.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the national capital, warning that the severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist until at least June 12. Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season on Tuesday at 43.8°C, which is 3.6°C above the seasonal average.

“Extreme heat can be risky. Stay indoors during peak hours, eat light food, drink safe fluids, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles,” the Health Ministry cautioned in a post on social media platform X.

The ministry also advised against going out in the sun between 12 noon and 3 pm, and discouraged strenuous activity during this period. People were urged to ensure proper ventilation while cooking and to avoid high-sugar, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks.

Citizens were reminded to call 108 or 102 immediately if someone showed symptoms of heatstroke such as high body temperature, confusion, or unconsciousness.

“The heat is rising, but awareness can save lives. Let’s beat the heat together!” the IMD posted on X. The agency also recommended wearing light, loose, and light-coloured clothing, covering the head with a towel or umbrella, and frequent hydration.

Dr. Atul Kakar from a leading city hospital warned that hospitals are reporting rising cases of heat exhaustion, stroke, dehydration, jaundice, and gastroenteritis.

“Exposure to the sun should be minimised. People should wear full-sleeve clothes and consume more liquids such as lassi, lemonade, and water-rich fruits like watermelon,” said Dr. Kakar. He also advised the public to avoid street food during this period.

Large parts of northwestern India are currently under the grip of a prolonged heatwave, with similar alerts issued for other states in the region.
