Faridabad, Jun 21: In a shocking case that has sent ripples of horror across Haryana, the decomposed body of a young woman was exhumed from a 10-foot-deep pit right outside her marital home in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar. The gruesome revelation came nearly two months after the 24-year-old victim, Tanu Singh, went missing.
The case took a macabre turn after Tanu’s father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, confessed during police interrogation to having strangled her to death in April and burying the body beneath a newly constructed concrete slab — laid, shockingly, on a public lane in front of their house.

Tanu, a native of Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district, had been married to Arun Singh for less than two years. She reportedly faced constant harassment over dowry, an issue which her family says plagued her from the early days of marriage.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rajesh Kumar Lochan, the murder occurred during the night of April 21-22 on the first floor of the Singh residence, allegedly in the absence of Tanu’s husband Arun and her mother-in-law Sonia. “The initial motive appears to be linked to dowry demands. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the roles of other family members,” he said.
The pit where Tanu’s body was discovered had initially been dug under the pretext of drainage work. Residents recalled seeing an earthmover at the location on April 23. Just two days later, on April 25, Bhoop Singh approached the police with a missing person’s complaint, insisting that Tanu had “gone to the market” and never returned.
However, suspicion grew when Tanu’s sister, Preeti, repeatedly failed to get in touch with her. “She wasn’t allowed to speak to us. Just months into her marriage in July 2023, she came back to stay at our maternal home because she was being mentally and emotionally tortured. She stayed with us for over a year,” Preeti told media.
The harrowing truth came to light after relentless pressure from the victim’s family led to a police investigation that ultimately exposed the concealed pit. A forensic examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Four members of the Singh family — Bhoop Singh, his wife Sonia, son Arun, and daughter Kajal — have been named in the First Information Report (FIR). Police are probing whether the others had prior knowledge of the murder or were complicit in the cover-up. Notably, Kajal was reportedly present in the house during the time of the crime.
The case has once again highlighted the grim reality of dowry-related violence still haunting sections of Indian society. As Tanu’s family seeks justice, authorities assure that strict action will be taken against all those found guilty.
