Congress slams govt for 'Criminal Neglect' of public safety

Panaji, Jun 25: The recent ferry mishap at Chorao has triggered sharp criticism from the opposition, with Margao Congress leader Chirag Naik accusing the BJP-led government of gross negligence and endangering public lives through poor maintenance of ferry services.

Calling the incident a ‘chilling reminder’ of the administration’s apathy, Naik lashed out during a protest held at the Betim jetty in Panjim. “This is not a one-off case. The ferry services across Goa have been deteriorating for years. The Chorao incident could have easily turned fatal. What is the government waiting for — a full-blown tragedy?” he questioned.

Naik highlighted that over 14 ferry boats at the Betim jetty alone are non-operational and unfit for service, alleging that they should be scrapped immediately. “Basic maintenance, routine checks, and trained personnel are essential for ferry operations. Hundreds of Goans rely on these ferries every day. What we are witnessing is criminal neglect,” he said.

He further criticised the government for spending lavishly on publicity and events while ignoring essential public services. “They have crores for PR, but no funds for safety. Lives are being risked just to cut corners,” Naik remarked.

Demanding immediate action, Naik urged the River Navigation Department to publicly release an audit report on all operational ferries and called for independent inspections and a compensation mechanism for passengers affected by such mishaps.

“Goa deserves better. This is not just bad governance — it’s dangerous governance,” Naik concluded, echoing the rising public concern over ferry safety in the state.
