Texas, Jul 5: At least 24 people have died in devastating flash floods that struck south-central Texas early Friday, with over 20 girls from a summer camp still missing, officials confirmed.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha announced the fatalities during a press briefing, warning that the toll may rise. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick revealed that some of the deceased were children and said that about 23 girls remain unaccounted for from Camp Mystic, situated along the Guadalupe River.

The river reportedly surged 26 feet in just 45 minutes overnight after receiving up to 12 inches of rainfall — nearly one-third of the county’s annual average. Patrick shared a message from the camp’s director, saying, “We have no power, water or Wi-Fi,” and described the flooding as catastrophic.

Massive rescue efforts were underway, including airlifts and truck convoys to evacuate stranded individuals. Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted a dramatic video of a rescue from a tree, emphasizing that air missions are continuing around the clock.

"This is a mass casualty event," said Freeman Martin, head of the state’s public safety department. Around 500 rescue personnel and 14 helicopters have been deployed, with support from the Texas National Guard and US Coast Guard.

Despite a brief pause in rainfall, officials warned of a second wave of storms. "We didn't know this flood was coming," said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, who called the Guadalupe River Valley the "most dangerous river valley in the United States."

Authorities have urged residents near the river to move to higher ground as roads remain impassable and damage assessments continue.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, two people were killed after a tree collapsed onto their vehicle during a severe storm, local police confirmed. The back-to-back weather disasters highlight growing concerns about the increasing frequency of extreme events driven by climate change.
