Mumbai, Jul 9: A 32-year-old doctor working at Mumbai's state-run JJ Hospital is missing after allegedly jumping off the Atal Setu sea bridge late Monday night. The incident triggered a large-scale search operation in the Arabian Sea, which continued into Tuesday.

The doctor, identified as Dr Omkar Bhagwan Kavitke, was a resident of Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. Police said he parked his car on the bridge — which connects south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai — and then jumped into the sea.

According to officials, a distress call was received at the Atal Setu control room around 9:45 pm. CCTV footage later confirmed the doctor’s identity. His mobile phone was found inside his parked vehicle on the bridge.

A search and rescue operation involving Navi Mumbai Police, the coastal police, and other agencies has been ongoing for over 12 hours.

Authorities have not confirmed the reason behind the suspected suicide.
