Mangaluru, Jul 12: In a tragic incident at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), two experienced field operators lost their lives while on duty in the Oil Movement Area (OMS) on Saturday, July 12.

The incident occurred when the two employees, Deep Chandra Bhartiya and Bijil Prasad, reportedly climbed onto the tank platform to check a suspected level malfunction in tank FB7029 A (Dry slop service - floating roof). Both were later found unconscious on the tank roof platform.

They were immediately shifted to the first aid facility and subsequently to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, both operators could not be revived and were declared dead.

A third field operator, Vinayak Myageri, who went to rescue the duo, has also been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru. He is reported to be stable and under medical observation.

MRPL has constituted a high-level committee comprising group general managers to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident. Relevant statutory authorities have also been informed.

Several dangerous gases are present in oil refineries, posing significant hazards to workers and the environment. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a highly toxic gas with a rotten egg smell, is a primary concern. Other dangerous gases include sulfur dioxide, petroleum gases (like benzene, butane, and methane), carbon monoxide, and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dangerous Gases in Refineries: Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): Extremely toxic, even at low concentrations. It can cause respiratory issues, unconsciousness, and death.
