New Delhi, Jul 25: Medical experts have issued a serious warning to kidney patients, urging them to strictly avoid consuming coconut and banana together, as the combination can dangerously spike potassium levels in the blood. The alert comes after AIIMS doctor Dr Parwez highlighted the risks of hyperkalemia—a condition caused by excess potassium—which can lead to irregular heartbeat and, in severe cases, cardiac arrest.
According to Dr Parwez, when the kidneys are unable to function properly, they fail to eliminate potassium efficiently. In such cases, high-potassium foods like bananas and coconut—whether consumed individually or together—pose a serious health threat. A single banana contains around 450 mg of potassium, while coconut water and flesh also have significant potassium content, making the pair a hidden danger for those with compromised kidney function.

The doctor explained that even moderate intake of these fruits can push potassium levels beyond the safe threshold. Since symptoms of potassium overload, such as fatigue, nausea, and muscle cramps, often appear late, many patients may not realise the danger until it is too late.
Health professionals strongly recommend kidney patients steer clear of this combination altogether. The impact may not be immediate, but the cumulative effect of high-potassium foods can quickly lead to life-threatening complications.
