New Delhi, Aug 12: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, marking a major step forward in urban mobility for the Uttar Pradesh capital. The newly sanctioned phase will add 11.165 km of metro lines and 12 stations, with an estimated investment of Rs 5,801 crore.

Out of the 12 stations, seven will be underground while five will be elevated, enhancing accessibility in some of the oldest and most congested parts of Lucknow. Once Phase-1B is operational, the city’s total metro network will span 34 km, significantly expanding the reach of public transport.

According to the Cabinet communiqué, the extension aims to connect key historical and commercial zones of old Lucknow, including Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk — all densely populated and previously underserved by rapid transit. It will also link vital healthcare institutions such as King George’s Medical University and major heritage sites like Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza.

The new metro phase is expected to ease traffic congestion, especially in old Lucknow’s narrow, overburdened roads. By diverting commuters from private and road-based transport, it promises smoother vehicle flow, shorter travel times, and enhanced road safety.

Beyond mobility, the Cabinet noted that Phase-1B will drive economic revitalisation, boost tourism, and provide greater access to employment and essential services. The development is also poised to benefit local food and cultural destinations, supporting small businesses and hospitality sectors.

Environmental benefits are also significant. Metro rail, being a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transport, will help cut carbon emissions and reduce the city's reliance on fossil fuels.

The network’s expanded reach is also expected to improve access to major transit hubs like the airport, railway stations, and bus depots, enhancing citywide productivity and connectivity.

In a broader sense, Phase-1B is aimed at making public transportation in Lucknow more inclusive, benefiting a wider cross-section of society, and reducing mobility-related inequalities. The project promises to elevate the city’s quality of life by bringing faster, safer, and greener transport closer to the people.
