New Delhi, Aug 13: Tech giant Apple has rejected allegations made by Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk that it gives preferential treatment to OpenAI’s ChatGPT on its App Store, sidelining his platforms X and Grok.
Musk claimed that Apple’s algorithms and curated lists place ChatGPT at the top while restricting visibility for his apps. He alleged that despite X topping the News chart and Grok receiving major updates — including making Grok 4 free for all users — his chatbot could only secure fifth place overall and second in the Productivity category.
In a statement, Apple maintained that the App Store is “fair and free of bias” and that recommendations are based on objective criteria, including charts, algorithms, and editorial curation. The company said its aim is to ensure safe discovery for users and fair opportunities for developers.
ChatGPT continues to hold the No. 1 spot on the App Store, with Apple integrating OpenAI’s technology into its Apple Intelligence features, including Siri and writing tools. Musk has threatened “immediate legal action” over the issue, though no case has been filed yet.
Apple is already facing an antitrust case from the US Department of Justice and continues its legal battle with Epic Games over App Store policies.
