Mumbai, Aug 13: A dispute broke out in Mumbai on Wednesday over the ban on feeding pigeons at Kabutar Khana in Dadar. The Jain community opposed the order, while the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti staged a protest in support of the ban.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had imposed the ban citing health concerns. The Bombay High Court upheld the decision, and the Supreme Court refused to intervene.
Jain monk Nileshchandra Vijay, who had threatened an indefinite hunger strike, has put it on hold after talks with the Chief Minister’s Office, but warned it would resume if no favourable decision is taken.
On August 6, the Jain community removed a tarpaulin at Kabutar Khana and held a protest. The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti demanded strict enforcement of the ban and action against those violating it.
Mumbai Police tightened security at Kabutar Khana, denied permission for the protest, and detained several protesters.
