Mangalore, Feb 5: National-level fest 'Art Beat 2012' organized by the arts students of St Aloysius College drew to a grand end here on Saturday February 4, with Alva's College, Moodbidri emerging champions.

The two-day fest witnessed as many as 16 competitions that tested the skills and talents of the participants. After intense battle of wits between participants of 14 colleges, it was Alva's College of Moodibidri that walked home with the overalll champions trophy.

The fest was centred on the theme 'GreenoMania', and the focus was on how little steps could lead to a greener tomorrow.

Speaking on the occasion, district incharge minister Krishna J Palemar, who was the chief guest, said that nowadays colleges by means of conducting events and fests have done more than the government in terms of creating awareness on the need to preserve and protect the environment.

Lauding the efforts put in by St Aloysius College in conducting the fest, he said that St Aloysius is a premier institution known for its resourcefulness in hosting cultural and academically useful events like fests.

"The goverment is also concerned about the environment, and one step in this direction that it has taken is funding of eco-clubs in schools. Moreover, if anybody approaches seeking assistance to conduct a programme on environmental awareness, the government will extend its help readily," he added.

He further said, "The youth today understand the importance of environment. It is heartening to see programmes based on such themes being conducted in colleges. Due to technological advancements, nature is slowly disappearing. The mobile phone towers have literally chased away sparrows, and one has to go to the zoos to find them. With the growth of technology, it is important to ensure that we preserve our nature for the next generation also."

In his address, he said that people nowadays are leading busy lives and do not have time to pay attention to little things, like swicthing off the fan when leaving the room, that can go a long way in preserving the environment. He also gave other tips on how to conserve energy and natural resources.

Unlike previous years, this time the chief guest was presented with a small flower pot, to signify the theme of the event.

Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of the various events on the occasion.
