“Somebody is not very happy with you”: Fiji PM’s remark to Modi amid US tariff row

New Delhi, Aug 27: At a time when India–US trade relations have hit turbulence following Washington’s decision to impose a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka created ripples on Tuesday with a candid remark to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that “somebody is not very happy with you”.

Speaking at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) after delivering his lecture on ‘Ocean of Peace’, Rabuka revealed details of his private exchange with PM Modi during their recent meeting. “But then, you are big enough to weather those discomforts,” he quipped, hinting at the global trade frictions surrounding India.

The Fijian leader, currently on a three-day visit to India, underlined the challenges faced by smaller nations when larger powers clash. Drawing parallels, he said, “Whatever is happening out there is impacting us… The youngest or smallest member of the family may not be comfortable, and everybody sits up and listens.”

The US tariff move — which includes an additional 25 per cent duty linked to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil — is set to hit labour-intensive export sectors such as shrimp, textiles, leather, and gems & jewellery from August 27. Experts warn this will put severe strain on India’s exporters.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi and Rabuka on Monday held wide-ranging talks, firming up an action plan to deepen defence cooperation, maritime security, digital technology, health and trade partnerships. Both leaders reaffirmed commitment to a peaceful and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

“Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the concept of the Ocean of Peace, which emphasises building a stable and sustainable future for our region. Prime Minister Modi commended his leadership in championing this idea in the Pacific,” a joint statement from the Ministry of External Affairs noted.

Rabuka also revealed that leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and other global figures had earlier shown interest in his Ocean of Peace concept, which he wants the United Nations and regional forums to adopt. “In this effort, India is an important partner,” he said, adding that Fiji and India can work together to extend the vision beyond the Pacific to contribute to global peace and stability.
