Assam, Aug 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched a blistering attack on the Congress, asserting that Assam cannot be led by leaders who 'frequently visit Pakistan,’ in a veiled reference to state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi.
Addressing a massive gathering of panchayat representatives, Shah exuded confidence that the BJP-led NDA will return to power in Assam for a third consecutive term in next year’s assembly polls, banking on the development works of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Modi carried out immense development works across the country, and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took that flow to every household of the state. On the back of these works, BJP will form the government in Assam again,” Shah said.
Sharpening his attack, Shah alleged that infiltrators had encroached thousands of acres of land during Congress rule, including lands belonging to Vaishnavite monasteries of Srimanta Sankardeva and Mahapurush Madhavdeva. He claimed the BJP government cleared 1,29,548 acres of such encroachments.
“All infiltrators will be evicted from Assam, no matter who opposes it. Even if Gaurav Gogoi objects, we will not stop,” Shah thundered.
The Home Minister also accused infiltrators of marrying minor girls in Assam and said the Sarma government has taken strict action against such practices, while also implementing education schemes for girls that now benefit over nine lakh students.
Taking a swipe at the Congress over its poor performance in the recent panchayat polls, Shah said, “If you want to find Congress in Assam panchayats, you will not find them even with binoculars.” He credited the BJP’s sweep to PM Modi’s development agenda and Sarma’s grassroots connect.
Highlighting the Centre’s achievements in the Northeast, Shah said peace has returned to Assam with over 10,000 militants laying down arms and several peace accords signed. He also underlined major investments, including Tata’s Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor project at Jagiroad, which he called a “game-changer” for Assam’s growth.
He further stated that the Sarma government has appointed 1.21 lakh youths in four years without corruption, exceeding its job promise. “By the time Assam goes to polls next year, this figure will touch 1.5 lakh,” Shah assured.
“Once Congress said bye-bye to Assam. Now, under Modi and Sarma, the state is reaching new heights of development,” Shah concluded.
